Abstract

45 participants – mostly educators – of 18 countries were presant and took part in the discussions of the Seminar, organized by FID/ET.

The work was done in four sessions. Papers were distributed in advance and rapporteurs summarized the papers and the results of the discussions. The first session’s topic was “Information science as an emergent discipline”, its interdisciplinary and educational implications. The rapporteur Dr. A. MERTA led the discussion on Mr. W. PIROG’s, Dr. J. SZENTMIHÁLYI – T. SZEPESVÁRI’s and D. J. FOSKETTS papers. The following questions were raised: in information science already an established discipline? If yes, can one state the social needs objects of the discipline and enumerate the phenomena studied within its limited universe? Does information science include library science too? Can information scientists and public librarians be taught at the same chair? What are relations of information science with its border disciplines?

During the second session papers dealing with research and development in education for information science by Dr. E. PIETSCH, V .SLAMECKA, D. W. LANGEIDGE and Dr. R. T. BOTTLE were discussed. The rapporteur D. J. FOSKETT introduced and summarized the discussion on the seven questions put forward among them, such as what are the psychological, sociological, economic relations between creators, information workers and users, how can we train students to understand these relations? Which methods can he used by the application of modern educational technology in teaching information science?

The third session was led by Prof. Harold BORKO. The discussion focused on Prof, P. WASSERMAN’s lecture, “Educational issues in international information systems development.”

Papers by S. LANGHAHS and Dr. A. MERTA were also presented.

The last session was a panel discussion led by Prof. E. S. JACKSON on the future of education in information science. The panelists and the participants discussed the following question:

What will be taught?
Who will teach it?
Who will learn?
How will they learn?

This panel discussion summarized the results of the successful seminar.
