Abstract

The term bibliometrics was suggested in 1969 by PRITCHARD to replace the term statistical bibliography with offered but an ambiguos denotation of the subject matter. Bibliometrics examines books and documentary materials by means of statistical methods. Bibliometrical investigations started a little over fifty years ago; it aims primarily at the description of the characteristic processes and forms of written communication take in the various branches of sciences, the nature of their development and their trends by way of analysis, measurement and evaluation. Bibilometric reaearch was given a sisnificant push by the publication of the Citation Index on one hand and the utilization of computers for the storage and analysis of information on the other especially aa refers to analysis of citation.
