Abstract

Recognizing the opportunities offered by the application of computers to information work, SIEMENS A.G. (Federal Republic of Germany) is conducting extensive development to produce special machines to be used in information systems and program packages for both specific and general use. From among the general programs, the GOLEM package is particularly important being designed to operate automated information storage and retrieval systems based on data banks. For the purpose of literature information, the GOLEM system may be supplemented with the TEAM package, designed to simplify the technical operations of thesaurus making, and also with the ALBUM program package designed for the automated compilation of special bibliographies. The latter two systems (and thus the integrated system, too) presuppose the intellectual work of man both in compiling thesauri and in the content analysis of documents. By adopting these syatems, the fully automated operation may be replaced by a semi-automated one which, however, permits a higher degree of control over the content.
ALBUM and TEAM programs may be run by a SIEMENS 4004/35, while GOLEM can only be used by a SIEMENS 4004/45 computer or a larger one of the SIEMENS 4004 series. In all the three cases, a 65 Kbyte operative memory and high capacity random or direct access background memories are essantial.
