Abstract

As the scientific and technical revolution is coming into full display, an ever increasing demand is being raised by production for the services of special libraries in the field of R&D, first of all for those of the country's largest technical library (OMKDK). It was with this end in view that OMKDK made efforts to fulfil its plan for 1970.

Its most important collections were augmented as planned. However , maintaining the level of acquisitions for the book and periodical collection raised serious financial requirements, particularly because an annual average increase of 10 to 15 per cent can be observed in the price of the latter type of publications (at least as regards publications from the capitalist countries).

A new special collection, covering publications issued by international organizations (UNESCO, UNIDO, OECD), has been developed to which 3241 items were added in the year under survey. The Library pushed the acquisitions of research reports in the form of microfilms or microcards, as well as congress papers (proceedings) as essential information sources transmitting scientific and technological results in a comparatively short time.

An improvement in the processing operations is shown by a stable 3 week processing time of books. Hungarian technical books take three days to be made available for users. The collection of educational and instructional material and the epbemeral publications, which are made available for the readers in the form of book-format catalogues, are processed by a computer.

In 1970, too, the Library's servicéé were much in demand. The Library was supplied with new furniture reading-, catalogue-, loaning-rooms show an interior worthy of the Library's fame. Catalogue-drawers conform to the style of the building. Ali this work did not at all hinder the Library's efforts to meet the needs of users, and the work in the reading-rooms. The major part of readers was composed of the representatives of technology.

In the middle of 1970, the two-volume Az OMKDK állományában lévő  időszaki kiadványok katalógusa 1945–1969. 1–2.kötet (Catalogue of Periodicals in the Hungarian Central Technical Library and Documentation Centre 1945-1969. Vol.1–2.) was published. This publication met with a warm response both in technological life and among librarians.

The Új könyvbeszerzések (New Book-Acquisitions) were published at regular – bimonthly – intervals. Six further titles in the series A tudomány és technika újdonságai (New Developments in Science and Technology), and a recommending bibliography in the series Szovjet könyvek ajánló jegyzéke (Recommended List of Soviet Books) were also published.

A bibliography covering congress papers (proceedings), whose machine-produced index will ensure a multi-sided approach to the material, was put to press.

Tables attached to the report are giving detailed Information on the division of periodicals by languages, on circulation, on the division of readers by occupation, as well as comparative data on the acquisitions and the use of reading-rooms.
