Technical information system of a designing institute

Abstract

The article gives an outline of the teehnical information system of MÉLYÉPTERV (the country's largest designing institute in the field of civil engineering and public utilities).
The information system covers all kind of documents, traditional and non-traditional, thus including, e.g. legal measures of teehnical concern, plans, designs elaborated by the institute, etc. All this is uniformly handled and processed on the basis of UDC. Both the regiatration of the material and various information lists are produced by a computer from punched tape records, a method permitting the sorting and selection of the material by thematic fields.
The author illustrates by means of figures, the flow of information within the institute and the persons and units involved in the supply of information.
The article describes, in detail, how UDC notations are transformed into machine-readable form, and also the possibilities afforded by computer programs.
