A modified edge-notched card system
Abstract
The edge-notched card system - which has already been adopted successfully by the Institute of Dentistry and Stomatology of the Szeged Medical University and is now introduced to the Biomedical Institute - is meant to store data contained in books, periodicals, reprints etc. that are necessary to study any problem raised by research work. In case of a smaller amount of annual accessions, e.g. in the given instance recording data of some 100 to 150 documents per annum, the system may easily be introduced to other fields, too.
The appliances of the edge-notched card system are:
- blank edge-notched cards (K/5);
- a plexiglass sorting device;
and, in addition, an extendible list of codes.
The individual phases of processing - defining the subject fields to be coded and preparing a brief summary - are performed by a scientific staff member proficient both in the language and in the subject field. Recording bibliographical details and notching itself is performed by auxiliary staff.
