Mechanization of the Bochum University Library
Abstract
The author studied, on the spot, the mechanized system of the Bochum University Library. In his study an account is given of his experiences.
The introduction gives a brief outline of the Bochum University, its organization and structure, it is followed by a general picture of the library, the library's data processing machines and of the mechanized system in general. Afterwards each of the mechanized processes is treated individually.
First the paper deals with the mechanized methods of cataloguing and catalogue production. Both the advantages and disadvantages of the library's catalogue system are treated in detail.
The author describes the mechanized book charging system emphasizing the efficiency of mechanization in this particular field.
The mechanization of the administration of book binding is also treated in detail.
The partial mechanization performed in the acquisitlon department is then surveyed by the author, who finally treats the most recent field of library automation: the use of magnetic tape services i.e. acquisition and utilization of bibliographical information recorded on magnetic tapes.
In his conclusion the author exceedingly emphasizes the library staff's attitude toward the problems arising from the mechanization, and the influence of the Bochum University Library's example effected upon the European library field.
