The Thesaurus of Engineering Terms and its revised edition the Thesaurus of Engineering and Scientific Terms
Abstract
The Theaurus of Engineering Terms (1964), along with its revised and enlarged edition - Thesaurus of Engineering and Scientific Terms (1967) - were prepared for a wide use in the field of science and technology. With their edition it was conceived that thesauri of the individual specialized branches of science and technology would be based on the given word-stock and on the given structure. This would permit to bring about an entirely uniform system of thesauri the application of which might facilitate the creation of a uniform information system.
The editors elaborated - and in the enlarged edition laid down principles for - the methodology of preparing thesauri.They offer certain rules for the selection and unification of terms to be included in the thesaurus. The second part of the rules points to the relations among the individual terms. The third part lays down the principle of arrangement.
The main part contains the alphabetical list of terms included in the thesaurus. Each term is followed by other related concepts (terms) included in the thesaurus, along with the indication of its or their relations.
This part has been completed by indexes in the new edition. These indexes list the terms in permuted forms, arranged into subject groups, indicating their place in the hierarchical system.
The respective word-stocks of the two thesauri differ considerably (while the first edition comprises 10.515 terms, the enlarged edition includes 23.364). The bulk of subject headings of tht first edition might be found in unchanged form in the revised edition, too. The sugmentation is made up of terms of subject fields which were not covered by the first edition (biology, medicina, social science, and so forth).
The Hungarian Central Technical Library and Documentation Centre /OMKDK) is now engaged in compiling a general technical theasurus for the Hungarian language. During this work, special attention is being paid to the first edition, although due consideration is also given to the indexes of the new edition since they very much increase the applicability of the thesaurus.
