The organization of the network of technical libraries of the Ministry of Transport an Communication. The statistical survey of the libraries in 1967.
Abstract
The investigation of the present state of the technical libraries of the institutions and enterprises supervised by the Ministry of Transport and Communication is based on recent statistical data. The organization of a unified library network embracing these special libraries was decided in 1965 by a joint order of the Ministry of Transport and Communication and the Ministry of Education.
The library network - owing to the particular situation in the field of transport and communication - is divided into six branches each being under the guidance of a branch centre.
The situation of the technical libraries in the six branches, e.i. railways, communication, road transportation, road construction, water transportation and air transportation are compared in 14 tables. The data provide the basis of future decisions on the development of library services.
The tables indicate that the situation of the libraries in the various branches is differing widely. The railways possess most of the libraries - nearly 100. The main task of the raliway libraries consists not so much in promoting technical development but rather in supporting professional training. The branch centre for communication is guiding only 16 libraries which are relatively big and function quite satisfactorily. The communication branch centre is unfortunately, not represented with technical libraries in important towns. The branch centre for road transportation is also well developed but the network is not yet sufficiently organized. Though many older libraries are attached to the branch centre for road construction neither the centre nor the other libraries have an adequately organized structure. The branch centre for water transportation and the centre for air transportation have relatively less libraries to care for but they "are serving technical development well. Tables show the distribution of technical journals subscribed by the libraries according to origin and branches, others indicate data on the library staff.
