Coordinate indexing for information retrieval on Uniterm and peek-a-boo cards in the library network of the meat industry

Abstract

The author stresses the necassity of developing a highly specialited descriptor-system or indexing language for each branch of industry.
Acoording to the report, the UDC seems to ba fully inadequate for information retrieval in the meat industry.
The first pbase of the construction of a thesaurus started with the collecting of terms used in the table of contents of the Information Bulletin of the meat industry. Using further sources: handbooks, periodicals, trade literature, a theaaurus consisting of 353 descriptors and 1240 ralated terms has been developed.
The information media used are Uniterm cards and peek-a-boo cards. The report includes details of the organisation of the information services in the technical libraries of the meat industry, as well as the methods for the extension of the use of the system.
The report proves the advantages of the use of peek-a-boo cards and of classifying documents only by their title for small libraries with modest financial support and personnel.
