Abstract

Aa a result of thorough proparatory activities of some years, the Directives of the Minister of Education on collection-profiles in scientific and special libraries and on their cooperation in collecting special literature have been issued recently.
The objectives of the Directives are to safeguard that all science disciplines, which are being cultivated in Hungary, should possess an adequate special library "base" as required by the development of sciences. As a rule, the responsibility for collecting appropriate special literature in order to meet the nation's demands rests with one large scientific library in each major field of science. The responsible library, in turn, deliberately shares its collecting function of special literature with other libraries irrespective of their network affillation, if any.
The libraries, participating in the collecting of special literature of the individual fields, are working within a so-called "cooperative circle". This work is controlled by "cooperation committees' consisting of the representatives of the cooperating libraries.
The nation-wide cooperation of collecting special literature involves 20 libraries in mathematics, 30 in physics and some 40 in chemistry.
Since the cooperation started in 1966 - well before the Directives appeared - the libraries have already pooled a considerable amount of their experiences. The present study reports on the work done so far; in listing their efforts and results achieved.
The three cooperation committees have first of all dealt with the base, resp. the supply of special periodicals. Relying on the listings of the cooperating libraries, union catalogues, lists of periodicals of the above three major branches of science have been compiled. The periodicals have been examined as to their number and then their content was also analysed in order to explore their sufficiency, their inadequacies and deficiencies. Further a survey and assessment of the series in the holdings has started to facilitate the identification of series book-titles which have to be collected aiming at completeness and in order to promote the coordination of these activities. Attention was also paid to those books, resp. series which were considered necessary but their acquisition has so far been impossible, and so forth. In examining the content aspects of the publications, the representatives (scientists, researchers, teachers) of the individual branches of science concerned have taken part in that work, - a fact giving a characteristic feature to this cooperation system. Due to the cooperation of the various libraries, sevaral bibliographic publications have hitherto appeared; their titles are listed at the end of the study.
