The State University of New York was established in 1948. The number of university centres, medica schools, art and science colleges, agricultural, engineering and other professional schools and colleges now is amounting to 68, located in 43 cities of the State of New York.
The number of students studying on all campuses of the university reaches 175.000; 100.000 of then being regular, day-time students.
Over the past few years, the university - in accordance with its educational reform - has tended to extend its international activities. Therefore, the university set up an Institute of International Studies and World Affaire in 1965 to perfom tne following functions:
coordinating all international relations of the university;
assisting every campus and educational program simultanaously;
keeping up an experimental program unit;
managing a research, conference and institutional centre;
ensuring the central administration of the university's international affairs.
There functions are performed by the institute's six sections. One of the most important section is the Office of International Librarianship, Learning Resources and Information Services. That Office concerns itself with all problems related to the international aspects of library science, librarianship, training in librarianship, and with theoretical and practical problems of collecting and presenting educational aids as (text-books, annuals, audio-visual devices, and so forth), as well as with organising information services for the readers.
