The teaching of the use of special literature at several Hungarian universities

Abstract

In an executive decree - No. 169/1966. (M.K.21.) - the Hungarian Ministry of Education directed the technical universities, the science facoulties of the Universities of Arts and Sciences, and the Carl Marx University of Economics, to include in their curricula the use of special literature, to be taught beginning with the 1967/68 term-time, as a compulsory, one-term subject.
In course of the teaching the students are getting acquainted with:
- the most important literature sources of those disciplines in which they ars educated;
- the methods of using bibliographies;
- the techniques of special literature searches;
- the documentation services and some of the principal problems of documentation;
- the most important scientific institutions, research libraries and information offices of their special field.
In addition to the theoretical lectures, the students also receive practical lessons to, do literature searches in order to solve some special problems.
This subject le being taught in 8 to 10 hours per term. The students have not to take examinations, they must only verify their attendance at the lectures by the professors' signature in their lecture-books.
The teaching of this subject is being organized for third or higher term students. In the first academic year for the students a collectively organized visit to the university library is compulsory, where they receive instructions in the use of their university library.
