Problems of scientific documentation in Sweden

Abstract

In Sweden documentation is regarded as an important by-product of research, its main task being to help science, research and industry to get the right information in the right moment. For this purpose the Scandinavian countries conducted an overall investigation to determine the user's needs, the result of which will be published soon.
The training of documsntalists is also a problem to be solved in the near future; detailed programmes have already been elaborated.
Lately several new information retrieval services have been started by various organizations. These can be characterized by their trend towards semi-mechanization and automation. International cooperation in establishing these services is most essential. A step towards this is the common effort of all Scandinavian countries in the various fields of information work, including their practice to publish scientific and technical primary publications in a world language and not in the isolated language of a small country.
