The role and the activities of the International Federation for Documentation (FID)

Abstract

The FID (Féderation Internationale de Documentation) is the largest International non-governmental organization for documentation and scientific information. Its aims and tasks include the development of international cooperation in the corresponding fields, as well as the investigation into and study of different technical questions. Its governing bodies are the General Assembly, the Council and the Executive Committee.
At present 41 countries are represented in the Federation by National members, mostly through the national documentation centres of the member countries. In addition, the FID has also several International Members and numerous individual and institutional affiliates.
The greatest part of the work of FID is carried out within the committees, the programmes of which are most extensive and dynamically adapted to the actual tasks.
The Federation also pursues a wide publication programme. An important part of ite work is the organization of conferences, international congresses and meetings in vaxious countries.
Hungary ie represented in the Federation by the Hungarian National Committee for FID. The Secretariat of the Hungarian National Committee conducts ite activities within the frame of the Hungarian Central Technical Library and Documentation Centre.
