Standardization of microfilms. Specialitions of processing mikrofilms and their title entries
Abstract
In recent years new trends have been followed in the standardization of microfilming. Previously mainly its tecnhical requirements (dimensions, density, legibility, reduction scale), the storage of processed microfilms, and the technical devices used for processing were standardized. Lately, however, the library and bibliographic aspects of microfilming same to the forefront as i.g. the preparing of the documents, the captions and the prerequisites to process microfilms. Some of the national standards, thus for example the Hungarian standard on microfilms, MSZ 3498-63, - have already included in brief specifications of title entries on microfilms, the setting of the documents for filming and the frames. But now it has become necessary to elaborate more detailed standards on an international scale. Therefore at its Paris session in 1966, the TC 46/SC 1 Document Reproduction Subcommittee of tbe ISO (International Standards Organization) included in its programme to deal with the bibliography and catalogue data recording on microfilm: Independently from the ISO, some notewortby regulations were already introduced by some libraries and organizations. The present study summarizes the specifications of microfilms and its title entries, by surveying the regulations, standards and projects published in the literature and under consideration of the Hungarian experiences. Mainly 33 mm microfilms are dealt with containing entire books, being used in libraries and documentation, but also the problems and trends standardizing microfilms of technical drawings are outlined. The article can be regarded as a contribution to the standardization of microfilms in scientific and technical libraries.
