Abstract
The technical development of our national economy and the level of industrial production depend, among others, on the utilization of scientific research results as well. Results of the research activity and the new methods of production are introduced, as a rule, by various books and professional periodicals. Their study or even "browning" cannot be made the individual duty of professionals as the number of technical and natural scientific periodicals, alone, publishing about 3 million professional paper annually, may be estimated to amount to about 12-50 thousand. Their exploitation as well as that of the other important products of professional literature ia entrusted to scientific technical information institutions all over the world. According to the statement of Soviet experts, exploitation of the results of scientific research and technical development activities is not conceivable, anymore, without international co-operation. The storage and retrieval problems brought about by the quantitative increase of professional literature cannot be solved oy means of conventional techniques, either.
The new methods include the employment of manual and mechanical punch card systems, automatic machinery for selection, other automatic equioment types and electronic data proceseing facilities. In the Hungarian Central Technical Library and Documentation Centre, for example, an IBM machine system is engaged in the preparation of the catalogue on educational textbooks, and a manual punch card system is employed for the registration of foreign technical-scientific films as well as of the literature on certain fields.
The Hungarian Technical Development Committee has prepared a number of studies and programs in order to promote the mechanization and automation of technical information in this country. Mechanization and automatization of the documentary activity is aimed at the solution of the problems encountered in the exploitation, retrieval, and reproduction of professional literature.
At the Budapest International Fair, the following phases of the information process will be demonatrated in the pavilion of the Hungarian Central Technical Library and Documentation Centre:
- Microfilm making on documents, storage of microfilms,
- Production of information material in limited runs, by means of punch tape typewriters,
- The documentation of automation.
The method developed by the Hungarian Central Technical Library and Documentation Centre, that is, the visual punch card method was used at the Budapest International Fair to subject headings for the book material of the 7th International Technical Book Exhibition.
