Abstract

The acceleration of the rate of engineering and scientific research work transformed the requirements and sources of documentation as well as the composition of engineering libraries. In addition to books and periodicals, new type documents such as research reports, company publications, conference proceedings and travel reports, innovations, translations, etc. gained ground, and the microfiche documentation system proved very suitable, indeed, for the collection and reproduction of these new document types generally consisting of less than 100-200 pages.
Advantages of the production and utilization of microfiche, and possibilities of its documentary employment. Microfiche have been extensively adapted earlier for the reprinting of run-out books and periodical issues. As efficient documentation mean, the microfiche excelled recently in the reproduction of publications issued by research institute systems, information service centres, and large-scale industrial enterprices. Microfiche distribution of the documents introduced by reference papers was similarly successful.
The new technology of microfiche production is under development. The production of microfiche cameras, printers, and readers increased all over the world. Standardization of the microfiche was again thrust into prominence. The popularization of microfiche is significantly promoted by the Microfiche Foundation: this body acta as an international information centre as well as a liaison agency between commercial companies and users.
