Punched tapes and punched cards in the preparation of a central register in the Central Library of the Ministry for Metallurgy and Machine Industry

Abstract

The costs of automated preparation of the central register of the periodicals subscribed by the special libraries in the field of metallurgy and machine industry were greatly reduced by the means of using tape-typewriter and tape-to-card conversion instead of the key-punching operation to prepare the punched cards. The paper tape containing the data of periodicals was prepared on teletypewriters and an IBM 046 converter was used for the conversion. The work of tape-typewriters and tape-to-card converters is described and the method of preparation of different lists of periodicals is discussed.
