Indexing of newspapers and periodicals
Abstract
In accordance with the recommendation proposed by the "Co-operative Postal- and Telecommunicaticn Organization of the Socialist Countries" (OSzSz), all member countries will introduce by the 1st of January, 1964, a uniform indexing of newspapers and periodicals. The five-digit index numbers (10.000 - 99.999) have been distributed among the member countries. Hungary is to use the group from 25.000 to 29.999. The member countries assign a single number to each of their publications which can not be repeated either in their own or in the other countries' catalogues.
Indexing facilitates catalogization according to uniform principles, registration build-up based entirely upon a number system, simplifies administrative procedures, promotes the extension of mechanization (punch card system), and enables the standardization of the present library number systems of various characters. The paper completes an analysis of the application possibilities of indexing in the field of library work.
