International Association of Translators (FIT)

Abstract

Translation problems deserve international internet nowadays. Due to thsa condition, there is an ever increasing number of such international organizations which commence to handle various problems connacted to translation activities (UNESCO, ISO, TC/37, UAI, AIIC, FID/LP, etc.). In 1953, FIT has been established to co-ordinate tasks of organizations in question, and to settle different combined problams of translators and translations.
To-day, FIT enlists translator organizations of 20 countries among its ranks as membors. Hitherto 4 conferences have been held. Its main body consists of the "Conseil" to elect the "Bureau exécutif" composed of the chairman, three vice-presidents, and secretary executive of the Association. It runs an official paper under the title "Babel" to aid translator activities effectively.
The importance of translations reveals constant increase in Hungary. This might be realized if understood that 40 per cent of tbe engineers and technicians employed by induatrial establishments speak but Hungarian with another 27 to 31 per cent of these individuals being educated to read literature of not more than one foreign language. Over 100 persons are engaged to translate technical papers regulary, this being their primary occupation, and about forther 800 individuals do the same in the capacity of auxiliary profession. It is, therefore, absolutely necessary to have the recommendations proposed by FIT (Translator Associetions, special translator registration, professional conferences, mutual information, etc.), and submitted to the various countries realized in Hungary, as soon as possible, and to witness Hungary joining FIT activities.
