The survey of the technical libraries within the network under the control of the Ministry of Metallurgy- and Machine Industry

Abstract

The subcentre of the technical libraries within the network under the control of the Ministry of Metallurgy- and Machine Industry was established in 1958, and it has ever since regularly performed the duty of surveying the libraries within the said network. During the two years and a half the subcentre surveyed the working of 160 libraries, amounting to 60 % of the number of the libraries making up the entire network. The surveys have been performed jointly with the department of methodology of the Hungarian Central Technical Library. The results of the surveys were laid down in the form of reports. The subcentre then informed on the basis of such reports the sponsoring institutions of the libraries about the tasks which it had found necessary to be realized for the development of the work of libraries.
Since the surveys up to this time did not give a thorough analysis of the work of technical libraries, the necessity arises for the subcentre and the department of methodology of the Hungarian Central Technical Library to elaborate an instruction comprising "the methodology of the surveying procedure and to use it as a guide in the important performance of surveys to be procesded with in the future.
