Abstract

We live in an information era, Information has become a popular commercial product. Processing and disseminat-ing information have become important businesses. Storage, processing and access represent fewer and fewer problems, thanks to the new technologies (cheap tools with greal storage capacities that are being han-dled with more and more common information skills). With the increase in quantity, more problems arise re-garding relevancy, How can the existing subject repre-sentation and information retrieval tools of the databases answer this challenge? At what levél are they able to solve the problem of quality information provision? The study is a survey of 50 different online reference databases, examining the characteristics of their subject re présen tation solutions.
