Hungarian scholarly articles in intemational databases

Abstract

The present study originally forms the 3rd chapter of the PhD thesis of the author under the title "Articles of Hungarian periodical publications in Hungárián and intemational bibliographical databases", defended in 2004. The study primarily deals with Hungarian databases and only examines the representation in intemational databases within a limited scope The databases available within Dialóg and including records relevant to Hungary are examined from several aspects. Based on data from May 2002 and December 2003, the databases containing records in Hungárián language are reviewed in a breakdown by scientific fields. The data are complemented with additions from the past one and a half year. Looking at the 8 most important databases taken from these two years respectively, the study examines the place of records in Hungarian language in the ranking of languages, and the place of records published in Hungary in the ranking of countries. Based on the levél of representation of the journals of Akadémiai Kiadó in Dialóg databases, the article aims to throw light on differences between the national and intemational cataloguing practices and draws conclusions regarding the necessity of national cataloguing.
