Abstract

The ideál information search tool is capable of retriev-ing relevant search results in a short time and even in large, heterogeneous and complex information sources. It enables the user to find everything that is important, without having to deal with inaccurate, incomplete, approximate, falsé or inadequate results. The synchronised fulfilment of these two requirements was a vision a few years ago, but as the levél of our current competencies shows, it can be achieved within the framework of library portai ser¬vices. Over the past 3-4 years, markét leader com-mercial library portai systems have been produced that make it possible both fortheorists and practicing professionals to determine future trends. Librarians contribute to the development projects with the deep knowledge of user needs. while developers apply the latest technologies in the design of their new ser¬vices, which at the same time motivates customers to think further. Librarians expect developers to take into account their requirements to a greater degree. At the same time, system developers need to jóin forces with organisations for standardisation in order to meet the requirements for unified principles as the basis for cooperation between different systems and technologies
