The author – past president (1982-1990) of the Association of Hungarian Librarians (MKE) – looks back to the busy period of development mentioned that was characterized by some unconventional initiatives and activities in addition to traditional association work. In 1984, Gábor Vályi – then chairman of the National Committee on Libraries, Director-General of the Library of the Hungarian Parliament and member of MKE’s board – inspired the planning and implementation of a Library Programme in co-operation with the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and the Soros Foundation. The Library Programme lasted for four years and had been managed and led by MKE’s President, with the participation of MKE’s secretariat and board. A chronicle of this successful venture is presented.
