Farewell, FID

Abstract

The oldest organization of librarians, documenta-tion and information profession, the Federation of Information and Documentation is about to cease in the 106^th year of its existence. FID survived the First World War, and its upward prosperity was impeded by the Second World War. Afterwards a reál prosperity has been going on up to the nineties. The FID was a forum for making contacts at a time when the world had been divided. FID has been the successor of the Unified Decimai Classification. After the end of the cold war and the extension of the European Union's activities important functions were taken away from FID Though FID had participated in the evolution of documentation technology and specialization, it could not keep pace with the largescale expansion of computer-based technologies. It was the main reason of loosing its ground.
