Full text electronic journals - quo vad is?

Abstract

Electronic journals are changing the way scholarly information is being disseminated. This article discusses the ways in which electronic journals have improved and added value to scholarly communication and highlights some of the problems also. The cost of journals, particularly in the sciences, technology and medicine are discussed and somé of the initiatives that are being taken by librarians and information staff to address these. In particular consortia are being used as leverage to reduce costs and somé resource sharing initiatives are discussed. A brief overview of action being taken by Australian librarians is provided within an international context. This article provides a recent study of library and information initiatives aimed at broadening access to information for researchers.
