Changes in the library and information professions

Abstract

The social aknowledgement of librarians and information professionals depends on their attitude toward their orientation in the profession: do they stick to traditional functions of librarianship, or are they willing to meet new challenges in their profession. The passive storage role has to be converted to an attitude serving users in an active way, according to their needs. The theoretical background of library and information services should be extended by the knowledge of other disciplines that can lead to practical revenues. The roles of task-centered concentration should be replaced by taking over other roles of librarians, especially those of the intermediary between information and its user, for expanding the knowledge assets of the intellectual capital of future.
