Digital libraries in the world

Abstract

The term „digital library" is a hardly understandable or misunderstood concept for many people, similarly to the „information society". The authors attempt to clarify the concept through definitions and through projects already existing or under development. The most important characteristics of the organization and building of digital libraries are discussed. Some existing digital library projects in a few countries are described, including the US Library of Congress and National Digital Initiative projects as well as some Japanese and European projects. In addition, a number of experiences with digital libraries are pointed out.
