Virtual eternity: objects in the digital library

Abstract

Approaching from both theoretical and practical aspects, issues of encoding and archiving in a digital library are discussed on the basis of international experience. Problems concerning textual documents are covered primarily, with special emphasis on Hungarian character sets. In addition, the digital archiving of music notes, maps, images and audiovisual materials are briefly overviewed, although encoding of these document types are still far less standardised than textual documents. Of encoding standards, SGML and its applications are presented.
