Cataloging of information sources available on the internet

Abstract

One of the most prominent tasks of digital libraries is the categorization of internet information sources for their easy retrieval. The network environment, however, presents signiftcant difficulties in the efforts of categorization. The problems discussed by the author include the definition of document concept in an electronic environment, the possible use of metadata and metadata standards and their unsolved questions, subject-oriented search systems vs search systems based on by bibliographic descriptions in electronic form. Finally, some important digital library projects are overviewed.
