Information recording and retrieval in heterogeneous environment

Abstract

A growing information labyrintti is the characteristic feature of presentday libraries rather than an effective and well-managed information system. Structure and search surfaces of computerized catalogs are apparently well defined but in reality they can cause difficulties oven for the experienced user. For both system operators and users the evolution of heterogeneous, multimedia network environment presents specialiy compiex challenges. New recording and encoding techniques and devices are needed to perform efficient searching of segmented and textual databases, and of systems connecting multimédia and textual archives. New possibilities seem to be offered in this field by SML/XML and TEI recommendations, with the latter used also for fiction literature.
