Research and technological development framework programmes of the European Union - and the library

Abstract

The creators of the EU's RTD framework programmes have recognized the role of libraries as organisations suitable for the satisfaction of several cultural, educational, research, business, entertainment and general information needs of the European society. The constant growth of information needs and the new age characterized by the abundance of information make imperative for libraries to be in the position of applying recent information and telecommunication technology methods and equipment in order to satisfy high demands and expectations of the society. Libraries can play substantial role in the development of the user friendly information society serving civil interests also in Hungary. The Hungarian participation in the 5th RTD programme of the Union offers an unprecedented opportunity for Hungarian librarianship.
