Role of the library in the third millenary

Abstract

The establishment of information society threatens with the danger of divkling the society to information-rich and information-poor parts. The role of library is to resist this trend and to avoid this splitting of the society into two classes. Information needs grow dramatically, together with new information and communication technologies to satisfy them. They will, however, coexist with traditional procedures. Advanced libraries shoufd apply all possibilities what they offer. The digital virtual library and the „reál" library must satisfy user needs jointly. Because the library's position is in the action field of the society, library management should strive for converting libraries to information centres serving the whole population.
