Abstract

At the end of the 80s, OPAC was the single subject of the link between the library and Internet. Recently, sometimes Internet is considered about the same as the WWW and telnet access to databases as outdated. The problem is how can libraries maintain the leading role in Internet contents services which they have gained with the introduction of OPAC. A possibility is the cataloging of publicty available Internet resources and their supply to library users. Internet resources resemble in many respects traditional information sources; they have title, author or corporate author, publication date and place, and publisher. If, in addition to these, the URL is alsó stored and the documents are provided with controlled keywords, the database obtained can compete with Internet search engines, at least in scientific and Professional fields. Libraries may play a leading role in the solution of problems associated with URL changes, providing reliable, long-term access to information.
