Abstract

The authors have identified in an automatic way 56 life science subject fields by clustering 25 citing journals for each of 306 journals in life sciences. Core journal lists were also created and ranked by importance in each field. Two mapping procedures are presented based on the overlaps of these lists. The journal collections subscribed for in Hungarian medical universities are very similar to each other, both in their magnitude and in their topics. Though the mean subscription number for a title is 2.3, there is no possibility, according to the data, to reduce multiple subscriptions and to widen the range of journals.
