Hungarian libraries with assorted collections of grey literature are currently making efforts to become part of the System for Information on Grey Literature in Europe (SIGLE). Through the SIGLE database, Hungarian documentation such as doctoral dissertations (theses) and other non-conventional socalled „grey" documents, would become more widely known and available. The Hungarian contribution to the database would consist of theses offered by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences library, those held at technical universities (those at Budapest, Miskolc, Veszprém), and those maintained at the Budapest University of Economics. At a later stage, dissertations at other university libraries may be added to SIGLE. Joining SIGLE would involve producing a database (which would include the cataloguing, subject classification and English title translation) of all items from the various collections, in the given SIGLE format. This paper offers an overview of dissertations as a document type, and discusses the problems associated with acquisitions, the present library collections in Hungary, and the various conditions of the above project.
