Using the tools of the internet, like Gopher Servers and WWW, preliminary versions of text archives or electronic libraries have appeared. Supported by the Information Infrastructure Development (IIF) project of Hungary, the Hungarian Electronic Library project started at the end of 1994. Its aim has been to create controlled archives of electronic literature produced in this country. The background, preliminary results and future prospects of this project are discussed.
