Trends on the German market for electronic publishing

Abstract

One cannot contrast different publication media on the grounds of which one is „better". However, the electronic publication revolution evokes new challenges for publishers. German publishers have reacted to these challenges in different ways. Some maintain that the book is superior and will always survive. Othere are investing millions in the development of networks and electronic publishing. A third group of publishing houses is approachingthe problem realistically by moving their interests and expertise step by step toward the creation of electronic products; Langenscheidt has been following this course. Following an overview of the advantages and drawbacks of some electronic media, the impact of internet is assessed. Finaliy, eight basic recommendations for successful electronic publishing are given.
