The QUELL and the askSam database management systems

Abstract

In Hungary, in addition to computer software developed in this country, programs of international origin have been extensively used. Two such program systems that were written to perform similar functions, but with different operational principles, are described. Both are database management systems, but one was produced in the U.S.A. and operates in the character comparison mode, the other one, produced in Austria, uses inverted files. Though their origins and operation principles differ, the performance of both is excellent in terms of fastness, reliability and ease of use.
