Abstract

The ARCTIS text retrieval system developed by ARCANUM Databases is described. As a basis of ARCTIS, the FXD and FXI module has been developed for data management and indexing, respectively. They can generate and handle large databases and indexes. The characteristic features of the database management system are: the ability to manage variable length and, if needed, compressed data fields, subfields and indexes. During searching, left truncation, right truncation and masking within words is allowed. Truncation can be used during the display of index, too. Various indexing techniques can be applied in the database, word-oriented, phase-oriented and combined indexing. In the searching process, in addition to the Boolean operators, AND, OR, NOT, various proximity operators can also be used. The program is suitable for producing facsimile databases, and it supports multilingual user surfaces. The ARCTIS database management system can be applied typically for CD-ROM publications, and it was used to produce the CD-ROM versions of the Hungarian National Bibliography, the National Periodicals Database, the PRESSDOK press scanning system, the MSZHR Hungarian Standards databases and HUNPATÉKA, the Hungarian Patents database, as well as the full text Bible edition on CD-ROM.
