Project for the improvement of the library network of higher educatlon in Hungary

Abstract

Within the framework of the educational reform programme in Hungary, the Ministry of Education and Culture has contracted International Book Development Ltd. In 1990/91 to prepare a detailed book sector analysis. The analysis, supported by the British Know-How Fund, has revelaed the deficiencies of the present library system and textbook supply system for higher education institutions in the country. As a result, the Government of Hungary charged the Ministry with the task to prepare a toan request for financial support of an improvement project at the World Bank. The objectives of this project called Human Resources Development are to promote and accelerate, with supplementary financial resources from the World Bank, the development of a new generation of textbooks for higher education and the restructuring of university and college libraries. The 4-year project is planned to start in 1994, and its prospects are to approach as quickly as possible the level of textbook supply and library support of universities and other schools in West Europe and North America.
