Abstract

Since 1908, Ethiopia has been developing its library structure gradually, together with the modernization of the country's culture and education system. After a quick overview of the evolution of public and special libraries in this century, the present library and information systems are discussed. Public libraries play the role of local cultural centres. School libraries and academic libraries of Ethiopia have distinct role in the country's educational and research policy. The National Library is devoted for documents of the national cultural heritage. Computerized information services in libraries are in an introductory phase.
