Hungarian libraries in the period of change

Abstract

This paper was presented at the LIBER Meeting (Budapest 1-4 July, 1992). The past, present and, hopefully, future priorities of the Hungarian library policy for university libraries and principal special libraries are discussed. Also, the financial problems of these libraries in the past, present and future are considered. International aids and foundations supporting the cause of libraries in Hungary are appreciated, and it is pointed out that these funds do help to overcome the difficulties associated with financing libraries resulting from the privatization of the Hungarian national economy and from all the change in the society.
