Online information searching in the Veszprém University Library

Abstract

Online search services have been going on since 1982 in the Central Library of Veszprém University, Hungary. The predecessor of this service was the SDI services based on Chemical Abstracts magnetic tapes, the Computerized Chemistry Current Awareness service from 1971 to 1986. The Library now provides online services for students, teachers and scientists of the University free of change, and for external users for a certain fee. Training courses are held for undergraduate students and for other users. The two main directions of improving online information retrieval are discussed. One is the extension of the scope of searches from chemistry and chemical engineering to other subject areas (business, education, linguistics). The other is the introduction of services based on the Library's own databases for university departments and external users. The Veszprém University Library has accomplished 360 search sessions from January to September 1990.
