The library action plan of the European Communities. Report of version 2 ofthe project

Abstract

The council of ministers on cultural issues of the European Communities passed a resolution on 27 September 1985 concerning the promotion of library cooperation in the fields of information science, technology and applications. According to this resolution, the second version of the library action plan was submitted on 28 February 1989. This project outlines the existing situation, determines the main objectives, points to areas to be supported, suggests guidelines and the magnitude of support. It emphasizes especially that national library priorities should prevail effectively. Five broad subprojects were defined as follows: recording of primary data on computer media (with special regard to national bibliographies, central catalogues and catalogues of special collections), the estabtishment of national library catalogues, creation of innovative information services based on new technologies, preparation of marketable products and services, and the dissemination of expertise and experiences. The action plan allocates a total of ECU 95 million on the project.
