Abstract

The Technical Research Centre of Finland (VTT) is a governmental research institute with 2700 employees in 35 laboratories, operating under five divisions: energy, information, process industries, building and communlty, and manufacturing technology. Its Information Service founded in 1947 has a double function: it acts as the information service unit of VTT, and it is also the national technical information centre serving external customers. Its information services include online searches based on the access to 60 online systems with 2000 databases, training, document delivery in the order of 15,000 documents/year, publishing activities covering 200 papers In VTT's own perlodicals and 2000 papers in other national and international journals annually, research and development of new technologies for information service applications (CD-ROM, hypertext, hypermedia etc).
