Abstract

Professional local government agencies and safeguarding organizations of interest would like to play significant roles in the democratic transition process of Hungary. Undertaking such functions, the Hungarian Association of Librarians elected new leaders at the end of 1990 which is devoted primarily to serve library and information matters by representing and safeguarding the interests of librarians and information professionals. Another event in 1990 is the formation of the Hungarian Chamber of Librarianship and Information that would accomplish also safeguarding of interests at the institution level. This paper urges for better separation of functions of these two organizations than presently, expecting a principal division of labour. Major activities are specified which are needed for local government and safeguarding of interest agencies to serve the cause of librarianship and information in Hungary.
