Abstract

The national information sytem of India is based on the cooperation of several organizations. The National Informatics Centre satisfies the information needs of the government. The National Information System for Science and Technology (NISSAT) is organised on a sectoral basis: different sectoral centres and associated institutes (subsystems) exist for the leather industry, health, bioenergy, food industry, mechanical engineering, pharmaceutical industry, environment, sciences and social sciences, transportation. A separate subsystem was established for patent information services. A special position is occupied within NISSAT by the Indian National Scientific Documentation Centre. Its structure and services are described in detail.
